a trip to the vet, and a very sad doggo later...... it was most likely an insect, but might have been an infected scrape from playing.

I found a huge ant colony, stretching further than I could see. The individual mounds were connected by cleared areas that served as highways for the workers. Some sort of spider had built a web bridging across the top of the highway in places, where it could reach down and scoop a meal at will. Small lizards patrolled the ant highways, on the lookout for an easy meal.

That look he's giving me..... a little later, he reappeared without the collar. Yes, that is my belt he has and is chewing.

Freaking Huskies. Thinking About Trouble:

I unloaded the garden soil and went inside for lunch. In hindsight, I should have been suspicious when my dog was not sitting at the table staring at me while I ate. Really, that should have been the moment I became suspicious.
